Our journey began in 2023 with a frustration we knew many UK SMEs shared: payment solutions that were hard to understand, slow to set up, and designed for big businesses – not growing ones. Founded by Stephen Wells, we set out to remove those barriers and create payment tools that are accessible, transparent, and built around the real needs of small and medium-sized businesses. We exist to make payments simpler, fairer, and more empowering for the businesses that keep the UK economy moving.
Why we started CreatePay?
CreatePay began by spending time with real UK business owners – café owners opening at 6am, retailers working weekends, tradespeople chasing invoices at night.
What stood out wasn’t a lack of ambition, but how much unnecessary friction they faced just to get paid. Payments were supposed to be simple, yet they were eating up time, money, and headspace. We wanted to build something that worked the way SMEs actually work – practical, reliable, and fair.
We decided to act when noticing the same problem recurring across SME’s. A MOT Station owner locked into a long card machine contract they didn’t understand. A salon losing bookings because online payments were unreliable. A retailer missing out on a busy weekend because their card machine failed and support was slow. When cash flow was tight, funding options felt opaque and stressful rather than supportive. Seeing how often these issues hit good businesses was the turning point fo CreatePay
Our Founder, Stephen Wells, noticed that payments in the UK had become overly complicated for small businesses. Hidden fees, rigid contracts, delayed settlements, and systems that didn’t fit seasonal trade or unpredictable footfall were the norm. Many providers focused on volume and scale, not on whether a business could confidently trade on a busy Saturday or manage a quiet January. Instead of empowering SMEs, payments were adding risk and uncertainty.
Why CreatePay focuses on SME's in the UK
SMEs don’t fit neatly into a one-size-fits-all model – and the industry treated that as an inconvenience.

We felt SMEs weren’t being ignored intentionally, they were being misunderstood. CreatePay exists to change that by building solutions around how SMEs actually operate, not how spreadsheets say they should.
