Our journey began in 2023 with a frustration we knew many UK SMEs shared: payment solutions that were hard to understand, slow to set up, and designed for big businesses – not growing ones. Founded by Stephen Wells, we set out to remove those barriers and create payment tools that are accessible, transparent, and built around the real needs of small and medium-sized businesses. We exist to make payments simpler, fairer, and more empowering for the businesses that keep the UK economy moving.
Why we started CreatePay?
CreatePay began by spending time with real UK business owners: café owners opening at 6 am, retailers working weekends and tradespeople chasing invoices late at night.
What stood out wasn’t a lack of ambition, but the amount of unnecessary friction they faced just to get paid. Payments were supposed to be simple, yet they were eating into time, money and headspace. We wanted to build something that worked the way SMEs actually work: practical, reliable and fair.
The turning point came when we noticed the same problems recurring across small businesses. An MOT station owner was locked into a lengthy card machine contract they didn’t fully understand. A salon was losing bookings because online payments were unreliable. A retailer was missing out on a busy weekend because their card machine failed and support was slow to respond. When cash flow was tight, funding options often felt opaque and stressful rather than supportive.
Seeing how frequently these issues affected hardworking businesses reinforced the need for a better approach.
Our founder, Stephen Wells, recognised that payments in the UK had become unnecessarily complicated for small businesses. Hidden fees, rigid contracts, delayed settlements and systems that failed to accommodate seasonal trading or unpredictable footfall had become all too common. Many providers focused on volume and scale rather than whether a business could confidently trade on a busy Saturday or navigate a quiet January.
Instead of empowering SMEs, payments were adding risk and uncertainty. Stephen saw an opportunity to change that by putting the needs of small businesses first and making payments simpler, fairer and more reliable.
